戒烟其实是戒掉/一种手势:
戒, meaning abstention, has the same meaning as the 5 abstentions, 8 abstentions, Bodhisattva abstentions, etc. The abstentions (also precepts) are the basis of the perfection of ethics, śīla paramita. It is impossible to escape the act of abstention. But one can recognize that the thing abstained from is, in reality, a mark at once distilling and concealing the turbulent sea of desiring. To give up drinking in the name of 守美儿五戒 is actually to give up communicating a certain set of signs. To give up a kind of change in the river's scenery. To give up a certain barstool posture. To give up a certain gathering of myriad heavens and hells dancing along the surface of a certain molecule.
